8.07: All set, ready to rock and roll. Opening day usually favors the starters, here’s hoping CC is ready to rock and roll.
Top 1: Did Jeter not get the memo about taking a few pitches as the leadoff guy? WITW?
Mid First: 7 pitches! The Yankees need to be a little more patient than that. Absolutely ridiculous.
Bottom 1: April is not typically CC’s month. Victor Martinez did all of that (8 pitches) for a weak grounder. A-Rod leading off the second.
Top 2: Yanks 0, Red Sox 0
Joe Morgan just said that 7 of A-Rod’s first 10 hits last year were home runs. Here’s hoping for this year. Nice play by Beckett and Useless to get that out.
Obviously, the Yankees strategy tonight is to swing early in the count. Take advantage of Beckett’s first pitch strike ability.
Robbie Cano is killing me. He really needs to mature this year if the Yanks are going to repeat.
Posada, Rivera and Jeter have all been with the Yankees for 16 years! 3 of the all time greats for this great franchise.
What a hit by Posada! Pretty Swing! Yanks: 1; Red Sox 0.
Ok Granderson, time to prove you belong. Taking Beckett at least 6 pitches deep is a good start. If Cano doesn’t pan out in the 5 hole, I bet Granderson moves up. Welcome to the Yankees Mr. Granderson!!! Yanks 2: Red Sox 0!
Yanks doing some damage with 2 outs this inning. Gardy starting the season with a hit. Beckett retired 5 in a row, now he’s given up 4 in a row. Jeter turning the line up over. Hoping Jeter doesn’t have a slow start. Jeter gave a good battle and lost.
Mid Second: Yanks 2; Red Sox 0
**Side note** The A’s demoted Jack Cust? WITW? I think Beane’s been reading a little too much of his own press. Dumb.
Back to the game, CC needs to stop starting guys off with balls. That will make for a long night.
Wow, Granderson and Gardner seemed to be a little confused as to who was getting that ball. Granderson still almost got him at second.
Ortiz moves the runner over. Nicely done by the big fella. Two pretty pitches by CC to start off Adrian Beltre. Nice catch by Granderson. Yanks 2: Red Sox 1
Lot’s of pitches that inning for CC but nice way to end it with a strikeout.
Top 3: Yanks 2; Red Sox 1
Nick Johnson is working some pitches too. This game seems to be moving kind of fast, but I just looked at the clock and maybe not so much. Oral just said that NJ is an “on base machine, walks and hits.” Is that good?
Tex and A-Rod not looking so hot.
Mid Three: Same Deal
I’m not sure what I think about Cameron as a Red Sox. I know he allows them to move Ellsbury to left which will hide his weak arm a bit but is Cameron really going to be able to handle the pressure of playing in Boston? Well, there’s a walk for him.
Great double play. There’s Cameron’s biggest weakness. He’s all ready to argue. In the past that has seemed to mess with his head. Blown call by the Ump. We’ll see.
Technical problems caused me some problems with a few of my last updates. UG. But this has been a good inning for the Yankees. Gardner worked Beckett like he caught him stealing something and Jeter came through with a fine hit. Orel should just come out and say that he hates the Yankees. It would make his bias less apparent.
Double steal by Yankees. Girardi shows he has some cajones.
Yanks pick up 3 runs using good situational hitting.
9:29 pm Bottom Fourth
ESPN interview’s Girardi and asks him how he ‘replaces Damon and Matsui’s offense” Good call by the UMP, Pedroia is clearly out b/c he slid improperly. Whine about it later DP.
CC is just moving and grooving. 3 up and 3 down. Doesn’t get better than that.
Top of the fifth: Yanks 5, Red Sox 1
I actually like Francona, I know he’s on the bad guy’s side but still..
Tex is 0-3. Typical Tex in April. Francona said that Beckett probably won’t go over 100 pitches and I know he has to be in the 80′s right now. He is just all over the place. Of course, the top of the Yanks lineup is doing their best to help him. 0-3 for A-Rod too. Cano should be at second. Good hit, bad base running. Of course, now the Yankees should send him to second. Martinez has one of the weakest arms in the league.
Joe Morgan just said that he thinks Cano can win a batting title? ???? Beckett is at 93 pitches. This will be his last inning. Yankees have a large advantage in the bullpen. Granderson about to face a left handed batter. Can he get a hit? Man, this game has really slowed down to a typical Yankees/Red Sox game.
Bottom of the Fifth: Long inning for the Red Sox
Hopefully, the long break won’t negatively affect CC. Sebathia’s ability to fight back is amazing. Ortiz had him 3-1 and the next pitch was filthy. Ortiz hit a weak pop-up to third.
Drew gets the second hit for the Red Sox after CC just dismissed Beltre.
John, Joe and Orel are just killing the Red Sox over the double steal. The horse is dead now, let it go. WOW. Back to back hits for the Red Sox. Nice hitting by Cameron.
What a terrible throw by Gardner to make three 2 out hits a problem. That throw should get him demoted. HIT THE CUT OFF MAN. I think he’s a college graduate too. He should have learned to not throw to home in that situation with that type of lead. Dumb, dumb, DUMB.
And CC just settles that issue. Yanks 5; Red Sox 2
Top of the sixth:
Gardner’s chance to make up for his gaffe that didn’t cost them anything. Jeter being nice and aggressive at the plate tonight. Besides his walk Nick Johnson is just swinging at crap tonight.
Bottom of the sixth: Last run for CC tonight?
John Miller is actually being kind of funny tonight. It feels like every time I look up from my computer at the screen CC is working a 3 ball count to someone. He just walked Pedroia to start the inning. The percentage of the lead off guy scoring is so high. Not good.
Well, here we go with a little Red Sox rally. Come on CC. Lay off the change up for the rest of the night. They’re hitting it like a _________ (fill in your own analogy here).
3-0. With Poppi coming up. UG
And the Yankees defense shows their greatest weakness! Swisher played that ball terribly!
Tie Game: I hate to say it but I agree with Joe Morgan, Girardi left CC in the game for too long. Cameron has the go ahead run in scoring position.
Top Seventh:
Tex leading off with a walk. Lead off guy getting on usually scores. Ball crushed by A-Rod! Sweet. New pitcher. Cano hitting in Matsui’s spot from last year. He needs to come through as an RBI guy. Gets the guy home. Nicely done. Posada with another good hit and RBI.
The Yankees situational hitting has been really good tonight. 2 of their 7 runs have been by HR’s, the rest have been good hits with RISP. Now Grandy hitting against a lefty. Draws the walk! Thank you Okijima! Now Swish can come through and blow this thing open again.
Oh Swish!@@#@
Seventh Inning Stretch: Yanks 7; Red Sox 5
Wow, Steven Tyler is killing that poor song. Who’s the girl standing next to him?
Park starts off 3-0, now he’s at 3-2. Just get through this inning, I think. Good pitch, better hit by Scutero. Cano made a nice stab at the ball. Ellsbury goes down for excessive window shopping. 0-4. I almost hope he gets another chance so he can have the Olympic rings.
And the game is tied. What a game. Park just gave that one up. The lead off guy getting on is almost always a bad thing. That proves true again in this inning. Well that outing for Park wasn’t all that encouraging. Granderson and Gardner looked bad on tracking the hit by Useless. Silly, silly, silly.
And the Red Sox have the lead on a passed ball by Posada. Here comes Joba. Which Joba will show up?
Top of the 8th. 11:16 pm. Three hours in, the Yankees have given up a lead.
This is a chance for the Yankees to battle back. 16 guys on base, only 7 runs…not good.
Well, that half inning was rough.
And Joba gives up a hit. Now, we’ll see if he can buckle down. 2-2. Double play would be nice. Red Sox get an insurance run. That’s the game. Yankees aren’t coming back from that.
11:48p.m Last Licks for the Yanks.
Well, the Yankees went rather quietly in the 9th. That is a sad loss. Up 5-2 in the 6th and they lose.
