Can I be honest; I want to like the Brewers. I do. I think their uniforms are cool. I think the little goofy guy that slides down the slide is extremely cool. I like Prince. There’s a lot I like about the Brewers—except for their constant under achievements.
Manager Ken Macha is one thing about the Brewers that I’m not sure I like. I know he’s won places but isn’t he the same manager that questioned Jermaine Dye’s “heart” when Dye broke his leg? That’s just bush league.
J.J. Hardy has left the infield but no one seems to be that worried with his replacement and the runs that he took with him. Prince continues to mature and this should be another banner year for him.
Ryan Braun will lead an outfield loaded with potential. They’re fast and should be fun to watch. Greg Zaun was asked to leave his retirement home and become the every day catcher. This means that the backup will have to be serviceable for at least 50 games, probably more along the lines of 65. How the Brewers resolve this position will be key to winning the close games, especially the night to day games.
The Brew Crew has dumped a ton of cash into their Starting Pitching. Doug Davis came back, Randy Wolf was given a substantial contract. Yovani Gallardo will probably be the #1 guy. If these improvements pay off as expected the Brewers could compete for the Division crown.
LaTroy Hawkins was added to the bullpen. As a Yankee fan, I’m not sure how I feel about LaTroy. He always seemed to wilt when the pressure was on him. Sure he throws hard, but I mean if you can’t get it over without it looking like a BP fastball when the game matters, who cares how hard you can throw it? If he does his thing though, this bullpen should be one of the best in baseball.
The key to winning in 2010 for this team will be consistent pitching and offensive production around Prince. If they can do those two things, they will give the Cardinals a serious run for the division.
