Colin Curtis heroics doesn’t mitigate awful officiating

The umpires this year are awful. If I hear one more sports writer from the four letter word station tell me how bad umpires have always been part of the game I’m going to bean someone like Roger threw at Kobe, or Colt or whatever the heck he named his kid.

In the bottom of the 7th of today’s game. Brett Gardner took a pitch that was called a strike. He stepped back, made a comment, the umpire said something back. Brett replied and then the umpire threw him out. Jeter could be seen saying, “That’s terrible.”

A-Rod, Yanks and Spain Lose; Umpires Lose More

Well, the Yankees lost a tough one tonight. Spain lost in the World Cup. That’s always a plus. The good news is of course that the Rays lost too.

That does bring up a good question though. What the heck is wrong with the Umpires? I know it’s a repeat question but the calls in the Dodgers/Reds game were atrocious. The Ump cost the Rays a run and gave them an out they didn’t earn. Now, as a Yankees fan, I’m glad they lost but the blown calls by the umpires this year are beginning to be troublesome.

What is Wrong with the Umpires?

Seriously, what is wrong with the umpires this year? It feels like there has been way too many blown calls this year. Maybe there have been, I don’t have any data to say one way or the other.

But

I can say for sure that there have been way too many unprofessional moments.  Jerry West sounded off about the Yankees/Red Sox speed of the game. Unprofessional? Check. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen an umpire take his mask off and invite an argument with a coach or player. That simply cannot happen. They are impugning their right to be unbiased arbitrators of the game.

George Will and Joe West Drinking the same Drink…

Yesterday (Sunday, The 11th), Gorge Will was on MLB Network George Will was interviewed about the length of games. George dropped a beautiful load of illogicality.  George said something to the effect that Joe West worked the plate at an Orioles game the night before and the game only went 2 hours and some odd minutes (I think it was under 2.5 but I don’t want to pay for the transcript of the interview).  Then Georgie gave us a beautiful throw away line. He said, “The final score was 3-0.”

George, maybe you should go back to writing articles debunking Global Warming.

9 Reasons Joe West Is Wrong

In my conversations about Joe West and his inappropriate comments I am hearing a lot of “I agree with him.”

But that misses the point of my post on why Joe should be suspended. The point isn’t whether or not we agree with Joe, the point is that MLB has had a long standing policy of not allowing players or managers to talk badly about umpires, even when everyone including the umpires end up agreeing with them. Managers have been fined and suspended for much less.  This isn’t about whether or not anyone thinks the games need to be faster (personally, I think that idea is laughable and very reactionary) but whether or not anyone can make disparaging remarks about other members of the MLB fraternity. To this point, MLB home office has said no.

Joe West has to be Suspended and Fined

Joe West has to be fined and suspended. He recently came out and decided that his country singing isn’t enough for his voice. He needed to use his voice to criticize the Yankees and Red Sox. Not for the way they play, well that’s not true. For Joe, they just don’t play fast enough.
Almost every player has reacted to this point with something to the effect that this is a guy that almost always seems to want to be somewhere besides the baseball field when he’s working a game. I’ve written before how I think Joe and Angel Hernandez tend to goad managers and players into arguments and go looking for fights. Here’s what he had to say
