Why!!! The Javier Vazquez deal just stinks

Seriously, why did we trade for Javier Vazquez?  I want to think that Brian Cashman is a smart guy and defend him when people talk about his stupid moves in the past.
I want to tell them that George Steinbrenner made him do those stupid moves and as the owner of the tea, he has the right to make stupid decisions. I may not like it, but that’s the owner. He can do what he wants with his money.  But then he goes and trades Melky for Javy.
I said then that I didn’t get it (I didn’t have this blog then, so you’re going to have to trust me here) and I don’t understand it today. I mean, I know that Melky is not exactly a future Hall of Famer, he’s not going to be a guy that makes the 100 greatest Yankees of all time, but honestly are we  a better team today because of this trade? No. Are the Braves? Yes.
It just doesn’t look like Javier Vazquez can pitch in the bright lights of New York. Why fight that? Why try to change reality? Are we going to trade Gardy for Jeff Weaver next? Somehow, I doubt it.

How much better would we be if we still had Melky? I don’t know. I do know that teams that win have a number 9 hitter that rakes hit after hit, which Melky did. I know he was a grinder and he was good for the clubhouse chemistry, which is something that Cashman—heck the entire Yankees organization seems to undervalue.

It’s too bad, because I doubt Vazquez is even going to be on the team at the end of the season. His ERA is just south of 10. In 32 innings this year, he’s given up 32 hits, 8 home runs and 15 walks! It is honestly beyond me how anyone can defend this trade. I’ve read that he just lost his mechanic’s last time. Even though I really want to avoid castigating him because he sucked for the entire month of October the last time he was in pinstripes, I would just like someone to point out to me the last time he pitched well in a game that mattered. In NY, every game matters.

I know he was good in Atanta. But that’s Atlanta, they play in the NL, also known as AAAA ball. Mr. Cashman, this deal stinks. It did the day you did it, it does today and it will tomorrow. We need a fifth starter. Maybe it’s time to bring up some kids from the minors and see where we are at with them.

also, javy finished 3rd in cy young votes, melky is a glorified utility man, though he was a fan favorite

      Hi Nolan,
Thanks for reading. I disliked this trade long before the season started. I disliked it when it was made. I disagree that Melky is just a glorified utility player. He’s a serviceable outfielder and again you are undervaluing the chemistry he brings into the clubhouse. Also, your point about Javy being 3rd in the Cy Young award is kind of moot as I have often said that NL numbers rarely translate into AL numers.
I respect that you disagree with this post, could you answer the question for me about the last time he pitched well in a game that mattered?
Also, the teams records don’t necessarily mean whether or not a team got better or worse. The Braces may well have been the same or worse, and the Yankees may well be two games up for the best record without this trade. We simply don’t know. What we do know is that Javy has looked bad, pathetically bad in every start that he has had this year. I believe we’ll only be better if we get rid of him.

Terrible post, its wayyyy to early in the season to judge the trade. The Braves were no hit this year and have won 4 of their last 15 games. How can you say they got better and we got worse when we are just barely behind the best team in baseball in the standings and are on a 4 win streak. The braces are 12 and 16 and are in last in their division. We are 19 and 8 and a game back from first. How does this post make any sense? Anyway, just let the season play out before you make judgments.

it must be good to be a yankee fan. your biggest problems are slightly less production out of the 9-hole and one starter with an era over 2.75. You know which one my teams starters has the lowest era—Dontrelle Willis.

is tomorrow’s post “WHY!!!-The Granderson deal just stinks” I bet Austin Jacksons .369 BA would look good in that 9-hole.
