The Yankees have a powerful roster.
The Yankees can score a ton of runs.
They have multiple H.O.F. future inductees on their roster. Beyond that, they have a lot of players that will go down in history as really good players if not Hall members. They are close to the best record in baseball and have held that position at various points throughout the year. The worst thing that can happen to them is that they will have to play a play-off game to get into the playoffs–if they lose every game for the rest of the season. How likely is that to happen? It would seem nigh onto impossible.
But
The Yankees have lost 14 of their last 21. AJ Burnett got mixed up on who is checks are coming from and thought he was the BP pitcher for the Jays last night. Girardi continues to make decisions that are questionable. Jeter and Tex are hurt. (I know, I know, no one has said anything about Jeter being hurt but what else explains his mobility issues?) The bullpen gives up more runs than the Democrats are giving out money. The hitters are leaving men in scoring position stranded like it’s their job.
In short, as this season winds, every flaw the Yankees have is being exposed, like zits on picture day. It’s sad, it’s ugly and it’s the truth. This team is good. Maybe they’re good enough to win it all again and defend their title. Maybe, but I doubt it. I doubt it because they seem to lack the mental toughness to do it.
Again, this is where we miss Damon. I know that sooner or later he was going to have to go, but this season we are missing that calming presence in the locker room. We are missing the brashness, the stand up to you and punch you in the mouth that winners have. We are missing that element that says, F*$% our losing streak, we’re going to win tomorrow and the day after that.
It just isn’t there. And I hate that. I hate it because as a Yankees fan, I hate to see them lose. I hate it because as a Pa. native, I’m going to have to hear about the stinking Phillies again.
Today’s a new day. Maybe it will be in the Bronx too.
