Seriously, what is wrong with the umpires this year? It feels like there has been way too many blown calls this year. Maybe there have been, I don’t have any data to say one way or the other.
But
I can say for sure that there have been way too many unprofessional moments. Jerry West sounded off about the Yankees/Red Sox speed of the game. Unprofessional? Check. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen an umpire take his mask off and invite an argument with a coach or player. That simply cannot happen. They are impugning their right to be unbiased arbitrators of the game.
Jerry West, and I’m not picking on him here but he’s had a plethora of unprofessional moments this year, makes a terrible call for a balk. Ozzie comes out and argues. What does West do? He shoos him away with his hand. Angel Hernandez blows a situation with the Rays. What does he do? He tosses a player and the manager.
There has been a trend in the last few years that the umpires are starting to seek out confrontation with the players and managers. This is bad because it disrespects the game. It cheapens the beautiful experience that is baseball. This is every bit as bad as steroids. Maybe worse.
Then tonight, Jim Joyce robs the Tigers of a perfect game on a call that wasn’t even close. I mean it wasn’t bang bang, it was catch, foot on bag, order a burger and fries while you wait for the runner to get there…and he’s out. But no, Joyce called him safe. Where were the other umpires? Why isn’t getting the call right the most important thing?
Joyce choked. Plain and simple. That coupled with the fact that umpires are increasing their antagonism of coaches and players and the only thing you can ask yourself is, what in the world is wrong with the umpires this year?
