Everyone has them. I know I do and I bet that you do too. You know that friend that is often right but is so annoying that you just don’t care. Maybe it’s a crazy uncle. The information is good but the delivery makes the information more painful than a double root canal sans Novocaine.
That’s kind of how I feel about Tim McCarver. I remember when he just did Mets games back when Doc Gooden hadn’t quite gotten into the nose candy like a fat kid swimming in cotton candy. Back when Daryl Strawberry was known for his sweet as sugar swing and not his prolific support of the prostitution and drug industry Tim McCarver actually did a decent job as a broadcaster.
This past Saturday was not one of those days for the Timster. He wandered more than a helium balloon with a cut string. He was blustery and made inane comments that were as profound as saying the sun is really really REALLY hot. There may be good information in there but it’s hard to come by.
He also compared the Yankees treatment of Joe Torre to the Nazis and their ally Joseph Stalin’s treatment of their generals.
This is where the friends and the goofy uncle comes in. I mean, that comparison is so over the top that it rivals the claims of Fred Phelps. I agree with Tim that Joe was treated wrong. It was time for him to go. They should have just fired him instead they treated him like a circus pony trained to jump through hoops and if he made it though enough hoops they would give him oats from the sugared oats barrel.
But Tim, they didn’t shoot him. They didn’t shoot his wife. In fact, what they did do was pay him a lot of money for the 12 years that he was there. What they did was take a chance on a manager with a losing record and put him in a position to be a sure fire first ballot hall of famer.
So today ESPN (A.K.A as the four letter word) is reporting that Tim regrets the analogy but he doesn’t take back his thoughts that Yankees mishandled Joe Torre. Well, I just compared Tim to a hate broker, I am sorry about that but I don’t take back my thoughts that he shouldn’t be allowed on the air for more than 3 innings at a time.
Is that really an apology? Nope. And neither was Tim’s.
