This is a series of posts written as open letters to Bud Selig. The point is to throw out some proactive ideas on how to “fix” major league baseball.
Dear Bud,
Thanks for continuing to read my letters. It’s been quite a few weeks. I mean, Jeter passes the Babe, A-Rod hits 600, poor Tony LaRussa gets picked on for playing baseball the right way all these years (it’s not really his fault that Mac was putting stuff in his pooper to get stronger). I’m not a big LaRussa fan. Talk about a guy that has his priorities screwed up!
All of the division races are rocking! Bud, I want to reiterate that I think you’ve done a bang up job. These letters are not to impugn you. They are intended to create some
conversations about how we can improve the game. Baseball itself is a beautiful game, but MLB may have a few issues. I realize that most of these issues are created by the mouth breathers in the media. Still, it is what it is so here are a few ideas for you to consider.
In my last letter I suggested that you need to add the DH to both leagues. The truth is that no one wants to watch a pitcher bat. Make the change, Bud.
My next suggestion is not all that controversial, except perhaps to a few bean counters.
Suggestion #2: Allow people to bring coolers to the game.
I know this sounds like crazy but seriously, do you think you’ll lose that much money? NASCAR does it and they seem to be doing ok. Limit the size of the cooler. Limit the material to no glass. But Bud, there’s a recession going on and at the rate our government is going into debt things aren’t looking all that good.
Let’s give the fan a bone as the saying goes.
You can still sell beer during the game. I promise people will still buy stuff. You’re going to help preserve future ticket sales.
Remember Bud, organization must evolve or they simply won’t survive. People love baseball, they also love their iced beverages. It’s time to allow them a more economical way to enjoy both.
It is time to make Major League Baseball more accessible to the middle class family. One of the ways to do that is to allow them to bring a cooler into the stadium that has a few iced drinks and maybe a snack or two.
Maybe this will allow them the opportunity
to spend a few dollars on some memorabilia.
It’s time for Major League Baseball to put their money where their mouth has been.
Thanks or reading Bud, up next I’ll be talking about some ownership changes. I have a long list of ideas to share with you.
