5 Burning Questions
So, I found this article on Bleacher Report today and figured I’d throw my own answers out here.
1. Who has been the best player in the AL East?
-This has to be Cano. The man has been spreading the ball around the field like a farmer fertilizing his fields.
2. And the most disappointing?
-I think this is Joba. The man is more inconsistent than a politician looking for re-election.
3. Who will win the division? And the Wild Card?

What if you were commissioner?
I’ve been traveling a lot on a mini vacay with my wife this weekend. We did the Brickyard so my posting will suffer until Tuesday but I am excited to start a new series called If I were commissioner. I’m going to throw some wild ideas to you on how the game of MLB can be improved.

Dan Haren to the Yankees?
CBSsports.com is reporting that the Yankees are close to acquiring Dan Haren. The report is pretty bare of any details. I wonder if Haren can pitch in NY. Of course, I wonder if any pitcher can pitch in NY before he actually does. I also hope that they don’t give up too much to get him only to have him become another Pavano. I mean the past deals with Arizona haven’t actually been smashing. Any remember a tall lefthander?
Tim McCarver, Joe Torre, The Yankees, Joseph Stalin and Fred Phelps?
Everyone has them. I know I do and I bet that you do too. You know that friend that is often right but is so annoying that you just don’t care. Maybe it’s a crazy uncle. The information is good but the delivery makes the information more painful than a double root canal sans Novocaine.
That’s kind of how I feel about Tim McCarver. I remember when he just did Mets games back when Doc Gooden hadn’t quite gotten into the nose candy like a fat kid swimming in cotton candy. Back when Daryl Strawberry was known for his sweet as sugar swing and not his prolific support of the prostitution and drug industry Tim McCarver actually did a decent job as a broadcaster.
A creed for life
I know he was a basketball coach but Wooden, By John Wooden is a great book. It’s a great book that illustrates how sports can teach so much about lives. I’ve read it inchunks and not in order. If you get a chance to pick it up, do so, you’ll enjoy it. Now that he has passed away I intend to share some of the passages that I’ve enjoyed over the years.
Here is his fathers’ creed as given on page 9
- Be true to yourself
- Help others
- Make Each day your masterpiece
6 Rules to Live By (in baseball and in life)
- Control your destiny or someone else will
- Face reality as it is, not as you wish it to be
- Be candid with everyone
- Don’t Manage, lead
- Change, before you have to
- If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete (You’re not competing, you’re losing).

Bring on the Phillies
What’s up with the Phillies? Tonight’s game should be epic with Doc pitching against CC but seriously why are the Phil’s so bad this year? They’re scoring is down. What bat did they lose that has brought them to this? The Yankees open a three night stand tonight with Doc’s team, then they do some cross town bashing late this week. I think they could easily go 5-1 if not 6-0.
Contraction: An Opening Argument
Contraction.
I know, it’s a dirty word. Merely saying it to some people causes their eyes to bulge and their stomachs to contract with copious amounts of acid.
But this post starts my argument for it. Anyone who has been around me for any amount of time knows that I consider the National League to be mostly quad A ball. That is to say that it is barely a step above triple A ball. I recently heard Vince Scully say that we have “watered our summer wine.” He went on to say that he thought we were trotting out 3 or 4 teams each night that are nothing more than AAA teams.
What is Wrong with the Umpires?
Seriously, what is wrong with the umpires this year? It feels like there has been way too many blown calls this year. Maybe there have been, I don’t have any data to say one way or the other.
But
I can say for sure that there have been way too many unprofessional moments. Jerry West sounded off about the Yankees/Red Sox speed of the game. Unprofessional? Check. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen an umpire take his mask off and invite an argument with a coach or player. That simply cannot happen. They are impugning their right to be unbiased arbitrators of the game.

9 things I think I think today but might not think tomorrow
9 things I think I think today but might not think tomorrow or the next day….
- Derek Jeter is hurt. He just looks slow to his left as if he can’t push off with his right leg. His swing is a little herky jerky. He just doesn’t look like Jeter.
- In tonight’s game, Cervilli threw Cora out in the second. The replay shows Cano’s tag hitting the left hand.
- David Wright’s career is not going to go back to what it was.
