I’ve been having quite a few fun talks with friends over who the best managers in baseball currently are. Perhaps, one of the best qualities of baseball is the natural ability to debate everything about it.
There has to be some guidelines to follow such as they have to have some experience. Girardi’s out because he only has three total years (although I don’t think he’d make the top five even he was eligible). They have to be currently managing. So here’s my top 10.
#10. Cito Gaston. Just because he’s managing a team that isn’t that good doesn’t mean he should be diminished on this list.
#9 Jim Leyland. No one gets more out of younger talent. Of course, how much he gets out of older talent seems to be questionable or he’d be higher up this list. His team’s failure to be defensively solid in games that matter is also something that moved him down this list.
#8 Joe Maddon. Best man for this team. Imagine him on a truly loaded team.
#7 Bobby Cox. I’m not a Cox fan but I can’t deny his ability.
#6 Charlie Manuel. He’s never won less than 85 games That speaks for itself.J
#5 Ozzie Guillen. No man is more entertaining to watch, and follow on Twitter.
#4. Ron Gardenhire. No man consistently gets more out of his players than Gardenhire
#3. Joe Torre. At one point, I would have put him above Francona, but his use of the bullpen hurts him here. It was one of my greatest frustrations with him as a Yankees fan.
#2. Terry Francona. Winning two World Series rings in Boston earns him a spot on this list.
#1. Mike Scioscia. As much as I cannot stand the Angels, I think that Scioscia is one of the best we’ve ever seen to take on the manager’s hat.
Don’t put too much into the order of the top 6, I’d probably be comfortable moving them around into almost any order.
Who would you put in your top 10?
